Netflix cancels Break Point: a significant loss for the tennis world
It’s disappointing not to see Netflix cameras at Grand Slam tournaments this year. The show, which aimed to popularize tennis and attract a wider audience, has been canceled.
Producers claim that the main reason was the lack of access to players. Organizing filming and interviews required constant negotiations with athletes’ agents, which were not always successful.
Interestingly, the creators of Break Point also worked on Formula 1: Drive to Survive, a series about Formula 1 that has been running since 2019 with six seasons. This suggests that the world of professional tennis is more closed off. This secrecy does not aid the popularization of tennis.
Another reason was the low ratings of the second season. Viewers criticized the show’s creators for not addressing the numerous hot topics: Alexander Zverev’s domestic violence accusations, Novak Djokovic’s deportation from Australia, Simona Halep’s doping scandal, and the potential exclusion of Russian players due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Despite the criticism, the tennis world has lost a lot with the show’s closure. Break Point provided a unique opportunity to look behind the scenes of professional tennis players, showcasing them beyond the court. Netflix allowed us to see their training, travel, personal lives, and the emotional roller coasters they experience throughout the season.
Break Point was a gripping story about people deeply passionate about tennis. We hope to see more such stories on screen in the future.
