Wimbledon women’s singles finalist Van Koot told why the Dutch dominate wheelchair tennis
The Netherlands is a leading force in European wheelchair tennis. Over the past ten years, it has won the top European tennis award five times and shared the victory with the British team once.
At Wimbledon 2024, the Netherlands team showed its greatest strength in the women’s singles category, where they had three representatives. The logical outcome was an all-Dutch final, with De Groot winning 6-4, 6-4 against her compatriot Van Koot.
During the tournament, Van Koot spoke to the press about the strength of Dutch wheelchair tennis.
“The success of local wheelchair athletes is due to the close-knit community and the inclusive nature of the sport in the Netherlands. Wheelchair tennis is integrated into regular tennis. So in every community or sports club, you can register and play wheelchair tennis,” she explained.
It is interesting to note that at the last Wimbledon, representatives of the Netherlands also won the Quad singles and doubles tournaments.
