Tennis trip: Brasov — a city of mountain views and Dracula’s legend

Discover one of Europe’s most beautiful tennis courts with a view of history.
There are several main reasons why tourists from all over the world visit Brasov.
First is Bran Castle, which is often linked to the legend of Count Dracula. Although there is no historical evidence that Vlad the Impaler, the real-life inspiration for Dracula, ever lived there, the castle’s Gothic architecture and eerie atmosphere still attract tens of thousands of visitors each year. Located just 30 kilometers from Brașov, it remains a must-see destination for both history buffs and fans of vampire folklore.
Second is the unique blend of medieval architecture and mountainous scenery. Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, Brasov offers several breathtaking viewpoints, including those atop Mount Tâmpa, which overlooks the city and provides panoramic views of its red rooftops and historic streets.

Third is the city’s charming historic center with its authentic architecture and narrow, winding streets. Among its unique features is Strada Sforii (Rope Street), one of the narrowest streets in Europe, measuring just 1.11 to 1.35 meters in width — a curiosity that often draws visitors looking for a quick photo or a fun challenge to squeeze through.
Where to play tennis in Brasov?
For tennis players looking to hit the courts while enjoying the city’s vibrant atmosphere, two standout venues await: the historic Baza Sportiva Olimpia and the peaceful Tenis Arena.
The Olimpia Sports Base in Brasov is more than just a place to play tennis. Nestled in the historic center of Brasov, at the foot of Mount Tampa, near the iconic Olimpia building (a historical monument) is a true cradle of Romanian tennis, where legends of the sport were born and trained.

Ion Tiriac, a name synonymous with Romanian tennis, was born near Olimpia and described its location as “the most beautiful in Europe.” The courts of Olimpia have also been graced by the likes of Gunther Bosch (former coach of Boris Becker), the brothers Traian and Viorel Marcu, and Jozsef Kerekes.
Olimpia has been the stage for many glorious victories. It has hosted international ATP Challenger tournaments, won by renowned Romanian tennis players such as Dinu Pescariu, Ionut Moldovan, and Victor Ionita, as well as international stars.
Tenis Arena in Brasov is a tranquil destination for tennis enthusiasts, located away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The complex is easily accessible by car (with ample parking) or public transportation, making it convenient for players of all skill levels.

The facility features three indoor and three outdoor clay courts (covered during winter), as well as one hard court, offering options to suit every player’s preference. A small lake adds to the peaceful atmosphere, while freely roaming rabbits and ducks bring a charming touch of nature.
Whether you choose Olimpia with its rich history or Tenis Arena with its serene setting, don’t miss the opportunity to take a cable car ride up Mount Tampa, which offers breathtaking views of Brasov, and spend the evening at one of the local restaurants, such as Casa Hirscher or La Cean.
All in all, Brasov presents a perfect blend of tourist experiences and the opportunity to enjoy tennis in a unique setting. If you agree with us, then it’s time to start planning your tennis trip!
