Clara Tauson: Despite injuries, she opens the path to a big comeback
At Racket One, we believe that breakthroughs in professional tennis deserve recognition beyond the intense battles of the top 10. Clara Tauson, our Women’s Discovery of the Year, is a perfect example. The 21-year-old Danish talent reminded us of her potential in 2024, overcoming two tough seasons and showing resilience and determination in her revival.
Tauson was a promising junior player. She won the 2019 Australian Open girls’ title and became the first Dane to reach No. 1 in the junior rankings. In her Grand Slam main draw debut, Tauson showcased her resilience under pressure by saving two match points to defeat American Jennifer Brady in three sets. It was her first victory against a top-50 player.
The Dane claimed two WTA 250 titles and one WTA 125 singles title, all during her breakthrough year in 2021. Her highest career ranking to date, No. 33, was achieved at the beginning of 2022.
However, a series of injuries temporarily disrupted her career, pushing her out of the top 100. Despite her young age, Tauson remained stoic throughout. In 2023, she focused on competing at the ITF level, seeing it as a necessary step in her recovery. This approach allowed her to gain valuable experience without rushing her return to the main tour.
2024 was a breakthrough year for Tauson. She reached the fourth round of Roland Garros, marking her first appearance in the second week of a Grand Slam. At the Japan Open, she advanced to the quarter-finals. Her only final of the year was in Hong Kong, where she faced Ajla Tomljanovic in a three-set match. Most importantly, it was her first final since 2021!
The key takeaway is that Tauson has returned to the top 50 and is confident in her ability to climb further up the tournament ladder, no longer limited to first-round exits. Her ranking now ensures direct entry into Grand Slam tournaments next year. With any luck, 2025 will be an even better year for her. Tennis experts widely agree that she is capable of achieving even more.
